Less than 10 days before the new Max will hit the streets!
Go check it out!
For years I have not been too happy with my front brakes on the custom Yamaha Roadstar Warrior Turbo 21 of mine. Especially after chroming the master cylinder and reservoir of the front brake system, braking power was very washy and would fade quickly.
Very hard stops where virtually impossible. Even the Galfer front rotors could not get the brake to bite.
I was pretty sure for a while that the root cause was the chroming of the piston housing that messed up the master piston slightly. Bet even on a stock Warrior the front brake could use a little more bite.

Time to get a decent camera kit for my bikes. Got myself a kit form www.HelmetCamera.com
Took the Turbo on a spin through town on this beautiful spring day here in Northern California. Enjoy the little movie!

I finally got around to posting up our last trip to the Dragon in 2006. Boy did we have a blast! This video was taken by Mike (HUGE THX!). He knows this road inside out so he had an easy time hanging with me the Dragon newbie. Well here it is - enjoy!
Ride safe!
Many Yamaha Roadstar Warrior owners have upgraded their engines with High Compressions pistons for more power and better fuel economy. Unfortunately that newfound power often comes with a dangerous engine ping, that - if left uncorrected - can damage the engine in the long run. With 92 Octane fuel for most parts of the country, it only takes a hot day for the engine to start pinging under load.
There is multiple ways to fix that ping syndrom, and there is many way NOT to do it. Lets start with the stuff you should NOT do:
Pining cannot be fixed by changing the fuel map. Some tuners will suggest to richen up the part of the map where the engine pings. Not good at all. You need to go rather rich on fuel and it will still ping in certain situations. Running the engine rich will not permanently stop the ping, will cause you to get bad gas mileage and will cost you power, the primary reason why somebody installed high compression pistons.
Pining can also NOT be fixed with various fuel additives. Stop wasting your time on these snake oils that raise your Octane levels from 92 to 92.5 Octane, at several dollars per tank and again at the cost of loosing power for puring almost nonburnable liquids into your gas.
So how do you do it?

Would you like to try out a new fun way to find you favorite RS Warrior items on eBay? Well here it is: eBay To Go. This little widget is preloaded with my favorite eBay Warrior search. It will find misspelled, mis categorized items and is simple to browse. Just browse through the items and click on anything interesting.
Enjoy!
More and more Yamaha Roadstar Warrior owners opt to upgrade their OEM clutches for multiple reasons. Either you upgraded your engine or you just want a more precise feel of the Barnett pressure plate over the stock diaphragm spring. Either way you want to make sure that the clutch conversion gets you the most. Since the side of the engine is open you might as well go all the way and get a little flaw of the Barnett SR-2 plate taken care off. The plate bottoms out on the OEM clutch boss too early when the friction plates have started to wear a little but well before they are out of spec causing the clutch to slip prematurely. December 29th was the day - or better night. The final chance for a great Monster Garage in my little bike shop. A whole bunch of the local Warrior gang showed up for a night of fun. As always we had some plans for wrenching around but somehow we did not get too much done. ;-) To much talking, enjoying good old Fat Tire beer, watching recent videos, pizza and plenty of scotch. The night started out around 7pm and it sure was one of the colder nights you find out here in California during our usually not so winterish winters.
A little theory of Fuel Injection
Today's fuel injected motorcycles demand different attention to details than previous generation carburated engines. There are several fuel injection setups available across different manufacturers. Tougher and tougher emission regulations are pretty much demanding fuel injected, O2 sensor controlled configurations.
O2 sensors are used to monitor the Air Fuel ratio (AF ratio) of the engine. Why is the AF ratio an important measurement/factor for the operation of an engine?
The AF ratio represents the mixture between air and fuel. For gasoline operated engines the optimal fuel efficiency AF ratio is 14.7:1 - thats 14.7 parts of air and 1 part of gasoline/fuel. Most modern engines however produce maximum power at 13.2:1. So what's the deal with these metrics?

SOLD
The Patrick Racing built 2004 110ci/1800cc Yamaha Roadstar Warrior is up for bids on eBay as of tonight.
A new Yamaha/Star project in the pipeline is asking for more space in my too little custom bike shop and Warrior Nr. 3 has to go and make room.
This is your opportunity to grab one of the fastest Yamaha Roadstar Warriors in the world.
The naturally aspirated 110ci or 1800cc Warrior has put our 111 (Hare) and 116 rwhps (Gforce) at local dynos in the bay area.

After two years of pretty much no visual changes to the 21 Turbo Raodstar Warrior, it was time to update some of the components of the bike. The extra large prior headlight combined with a more nostalgic paint schema got replace by a more modern contemporary combination. The new paint from my special paint master Erik Solorio was targeted to look more racy than prior while going with the same basic concept. The headlight got replace with a flat alien style headlight for which I found a great deal on eBay.

This weekend was time for some real power. Now that the 21 turbo Roadstar Warrior got a 2" intercooler, a massive plenum with integrated velocity stacks an d a new boost controller, it was time to run the bike up the boost gauge. Before that a couple changes had to be made as the bikes clutch just would not keep up with the power. I took the clutch apart. The chatter plates came out and the clutch hub machined, taking 0.3 mm off to avoid having the Barnett plate bottom out. In the end only new, full size friction & steel plates got installed. Clutch problems solved. With a good working clutch the next little issue became obvious: Boost creep. In 4th and 5th gear the new setup suddenly made a lot more boost than planned. Even with the waste gate set to 10 psi the boost toped out at over 15 psi in high gears. Turns out the intake and exhaust are now both so free flowing that the internal waste gate no longer vents enough exhaust gases when the engine runs under high load. After some investigation, the turbo came apart and underwent some porting. Now the T28 has a ported waste gate that flows significantly more hot gases when open. After installing the ported turbo the boost creep got reduced significantly, although some extra work will be required in the near future. (Click here for the entire article)
Several weeks have passed since the last update on one of the current project bikes. I still have not come up with a name for it continues as the 'Midnight'.
The exhaust made some nice progress with a lot of work that was put into it. Lots of welding, sanding and polishing gave it this close to final 3D look. I was also able to do a road test by running it on my 110ci Patrick Racing bike up Mt. Hamilton. Lets say its loud and it screams but the best thing is that it pulls very hard above 5000 rpm. The reverse venturi cone built into the 3D shape seems to work pretty well. (Click here for the entire article)
The team of Patrick Racing under Nigel Patrick did it again! After winning the world championship in the hot rod cruiser class 3 years (!) in a row, they established a new top speed record for the class during the first race of the year.
Rick McWaters got Nigel's Warrior up to 150.05 mph or about 240kph in the quarter mile! Thats some serious racing for a stock looking Roadstar Warrior.
Congratulations to Rick and the entire team from Patrick Racing!
Let the VRods come! ;-)

The last couple of weeks have been busy. Aside from some minor projects and finally enough sunny days to do some serious riding, I finally got into the long planned custom Roadstar Warrior project. Combine great components with wild fabrication. I am about 1/2 done with the bare fabrication work and have another 2-3 weeks ahead of me, pounding sheet metal and welding aluminum, making a few more billet pieces and adapters before the parts can leave for painting and chrome. Turns out that this particular mix of components had me spend hours and hours on the lathe, making custom brackets and spacers - most of them never noticed once the project is all complete.
The time has come when I have started dreaming of the sweet prototyping machine that Jeff has in his shop down in San Diego. Even the simple brake disc to wheel combinations required custom spacers and mounts.
Well here is the story of the project so far:

Finally - after almost 2 months of wait for the backordered parts, the Nitro components arrived! A full blown high performance kit from NOS - ready to be mounted onto the Turbo Warrior. In the meantime I had the heads treated by Patrick Racing with some oversized valves and extra porting.
The NOS kit is a generic high performance car-type fuel injection kit and will require some customization. Its paired with a polished 2lbs bottle.
It should take about 2 weeks of fabrication to finalize the install and head back onto the dyno. I will keep you posted.
Thanks to Redhorse some of his video creations are now available through Google Video. You can find them throug the following search: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=road+star+warrior or try http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=redhorse to find all of his creations.
There are more clips out there but this search brings up some of the better know ones from the last 2 years. Keep up putting new ones out there Rich!

Its time for something new. The Patrick Racing turbo setup for the 21 bike has been a lot of fun. There is no such thing as not enough power. It moves the bike and you have to be very careful how to use all that power. So what else would you wish for? Well there is never too much power ;-). In reality I wanted to push the bike further than I got so far. The PR setup with the Monster custom 3" exhaust put out some 160 rwhps at about 16-17 psi of boost. It became pretty clear that going further would require some radical changes. The increase in intake temperature with additional boost robs too much power and is also not for the life of the engine. In order to get closer to that 200 rwhps limit an intercooler and some other modifications had to be done. (Click here for the entire article)
Who would have thought I would end up with a 2005 midnight Warrior after all that project work I did on my 02 turbo. Well it turned up on eBay only 15 min from my house while I was looking for a commuter bike like the FZ1. I felt the deal was too good to pass on. Brand new with only 250 miles on it and plenty of chrome and accessories. (Click here for the entire article)
Wow Time went by really fast. I have been too buys at work to do much bike work. Let's say I have been able to sneak some fabrication time in here and there - more to come soon - but now to the new pics. I just received the latest Yamaha ad shots. Not sure if the burn out will make it into the papers - it was kind of a fun shot at the end of the day. We made the hall unusable for a while as white smoke filled the air within seconds. Like me you shop on eBay for your RS Warrior parts. Nothing special about RS Warrior. You would face the same challenge for any other product you search for. So what's the challenge? Well product names do overlap quite a bit these days. Yamaha not only sells the Road Star Warrior, they also sell the Yamaha Warrior 350 ATV. In addition people listing items on eBay do sometimes miss spell their listings or use different terms to describe one and the same product or pick the wrong category. There is an easy solution to the problem: eBay advanced search. (Click here for the entire article)
Can you believe it? Its true. Yamaha did a casting for their new custom bike portrait TV spot called
Star Portraits
and they picked my 21 Turbo Warrior. Here is the entire spot in 3 different resolutions. From Dialup to Highspeed broadband. Its for everyone.
Enjoy!
